Saying Goodbye

September 28, 2011

It’s never fun to say goodbye. Or at least almost never, especially when you have a hunch that the good bye is very nearly forever.

I recently had to bid adieu to the wonderful world of Tajikistan, and though I was excited to return and see my family and friends in the states again, it was very…..sad. There is no other word but sad to describe what I felt when I thought about leaving. I found amazing co-workers, friends, and acquaintances in Tajikistan and it is painful to think that I will most likely never get to see any of them again.

Not because I don’t want to, but because Tajikistan is not an easy place to get to. And there are always adventures elsewhere in the future. Which is probably why goodbyes are so bitter-sweet. It’s sad and hurtful to leave people and places you have grown to love, but exciting to be moving on and experiencing new things. It’s almost as if the promise of new experiences have to be balanced by the melancholy of knowing that they aren’t forever.

It makes everything that much sweeter.
