Hitchhiker with a satchel

June 12, 2016

Yesterday I picked him up

a leather jacket

teeth missing

but dressed to the nines,

even his socks in his shoes were shined.

Hailing form Florida

to Idaho he came

a veteran visiting a bedridden friend

Wrong town, so now he stands

thumbing a ride to the next town over.

At first passed, then made a quick right.

Three turns later and I opened up my door.

Where you headed

The hospital to see a friend.

Quiet conversation, then words the rung with truth

This country got arrogant and smug after the 2nd World War

We saved the world, but still, we’re arrogant and smug

We used to be so beloved.
